Species and Sizes

Old Wood LLC works with many species and we are capable of sourcing and utilizing many species and unusual shapes and applications.
Industrial Wood Blocks: Ponderosa Pine is our favored specie. See the Technical tab for more in depth information and a technical assessment written by our Yale Graduate Forester. We can make industrial blocks from Douglas fir as well but the price is somewhat higher and often we see more defect in the blocks due to sap pockets and checking.
Commercial Residential: Ponderosa Pine: Sizes: any thickness from ½”, 1 ½”, 2”, 3” are common while blocks as thick as 6” were used by railroad yards here in New Mexico.

Douglas Fir:
Sizes: ½” x 4x4 is common as seen here for commercial and residential use.
May be used as Pine in industrial applications and is similar sizes.
Pinon from Desert Restoration: (see video page please!)

Pinon is a very small and twisty wood which actually yields a very hard, stable block; 4x4” and ½” thick is ‘normal’ or Ύ”-1”. Not appropriate for Industrial use due to price.
We can make Hexagons and Octagons up to 10 and even larger for special jobs. Species for this are Doug Fir and Pine. Don’t worry! End grain pine will last a century if kept dry. Colors: Both Pine and Doug fir can be stained nearly any color and the end grain accepts the stain deep down into the grain for a super durable color fast wear surface.

Oak can be used to good ends however it is extremely prone to warping and other deformation as it has both a ring and a ray structure, both of which permit deformation during drying and re-hydration. (my opinion and experience).
Walnut: Lovely but extremely prone to splitting once dry. May be used in larger thicker blocks and with extra care on installation. Again, useable but difficult.
Hexagons, Octagons, Pinwheels, Ceramic and stone inserts are all possible and very doable.
